Bio-sensors, Bio-signals and Bio-systems Bio-engineering focuses engineering and the life sciences. It promotes scientific discovery to better the understanding of health problems and it fosters the development of new technologies to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and efficacy of treatment.
Communications and Networks Electronic communications permeate all facets of everyday life and are, in a sense, the nervous system that binds together society. OSU has a strong program in communication systems and theory, with an emphasis on network security, analysis, design, and wireless communication system performance.
Computer Architecture A computer architect utilizes detailed knowledge of hardware and software to design computer systems. This includes the detailed design of components within the microprocessor as well as the various components that interact with the core processor. Architects create the blueprint of not only single CPU's, but entire multiprocessor systems with their various interconnecting hardware.
Electromagnetics Research in computational E&M is becoming more and more closely tied to wireless communications, and high speed computer design. Electromagnetic field theory is the main research and education area of the laboratory. Applications in electrical engineering include RFID and wireless communication in harsh environments.
Energy and Power The field of energy and power is gaining prominence due to the critical nature of its infrastructure, realization of the strong ties between energy, economics and environment; need to develop green technologies, increasing use of power electronics to improve reliability and power quality, and the federal deregulation of the industry.
Intelligent Control Systems Control systems are a key enabling technology for the increase in functionality and safety of many critical applications such as transportation systems, manufacturing systems, medical devices, and networked embedded systems. The design of today's complex control systems is challenging since it requires a strong foundation in several disciplines including electrical, chemical, mechanical and aerospace engineering, as well as biology, computer science, and economics.
Photonics and Electro-optics The science of photonics, or using light as current electrical engineering uses electrons, is the basic technology behind the current communications revolution. As higher and higher data rates are required, photonics will play an ever larger role in the successful engineer's toolbox.
Robotics and Embedded Systems The research in robotics and embedded systems impacts a broad spectrum of applications, including assistance, training and rehabilitation, education, environmental monitoring and cleanup, emergency response, homeland security, military and entertainment.
Signal/Image/Video Processing The prevalence of various data processing technologies and high-end computers has enabled the ability to mathematically manipulate data which has formerly relied on the brain for processing such as speech, audio, images, and video. Data processing touches a large variety of engineering problems, from communication to human-computer interface, to medical imaging and multimedia.
VLSI and Solid State The field of VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) is concerned with the design, production, and use of highly complex integrated circuits. The revolution in communications and information technology has been fueled by less publicized advances in other areas.
